Reading Clinic Strategies

Aja Booker provided the following strategies to aide in fluency, vocabulary and comprehension.

Fluency Strategy:
Reader's Theatre
Students become excited and enthusiastic about reading when they are presented with the opportunity to participate in Readers Theatre. In this lesson, students develop scripts, perform in groups, and practice using their voice to depict characters from texts. Through this activity, students have the opportunity to develop fluency and further enhance comprehension of what they are reading.

Vocabulary Strategy:
Verbal and Visual Word Association
The Visual-Verbal Word Association combines what students learn about the power of visualization and basic vocabulary strategy through the use of note cards or paper to create word banks or word walls.

Comprehension Strategy:
Directed Reading-Thinking Activity
The Directed Reading-Thinking Activity (DRTA) centers on open-ended questions about the reading experience. This activity is designed to make students aware of their own interpretive actions during reading. The DRTA process helps students recognize predictions, judgments, and evidence verification.
